Meditation has many benefits, relief from stress, anxiety and depression being among them. It is a practice where an individual uses a technique – such as mindfulness, or focusing their mind on a particular object, thought or activity – to train attention and awareness, and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state.

Metta (or loving-kindness) meditation is best suited for this for it begins with developing kind thoughts and feelings towards yourself. It increases positivity, empathy and compassionate behaviors towards others.

Meditation requires a strong amount of mental discipline, which is often lacking in individuals who have addictions. By strengthening your mental discipline, you can break the dependencies by increasing your self-control and awareness of triggers for the addictive behaviors.

High blood pressure makes the heart work harder to pump blood through your entire body and over time, this can lead to poor heart function. Meditation may control blood pressure by relaxing the nerve signals that coordinate heart function and tension in blood vessels.
