Meditation has many benefits, relief from stress, anxiety and depression being among them. It is a practice where an individual uses a technique – such as mindfulness, or focusing their mind on a particular object, thought or activity – to train attention and awareness, and achieve a mentally clear and emotionally calm and stable state.

Reduce Stress

Stress causes an increases level of build up of the hormone called cortisol. This hormone is one of the main causes the harmful effects of stress and play an active roll in insomnia, promotion of anxiety and depression, increased blood pressure, fatigue and cloudy thinking. By using any form of meditation, you can reduce these symptoms.

Controls Anxiety

Meditating on a regular basis can help reduce the symptoms of anxiety and anxiety related mental health problems like phobias and obsessive-compulsive behaviors. By eliminating the stress through meditation, we can eliminate anxiety from the stress.

Promotes Emotional Health

Some forms of meditation can lead to an improved self-image and more positive out look on life. When we are stressed, our bodies release inflammatory chemicals called cytokines that can affect our mood and can lead to depression. When we lower cytokines in our system through meditation, we can reduce the negative symptoms and boost our overall mood.

When practiced on a regular basis, some forms of meditation can improve depression and create a more positive outlook on life. By maintaining an ongoing habit of meditation, may be able to maintain these benefits in the long run.

Enhances Self-Awareness

Some forms of meditation can give you a better understanding of yourself which, in return, helps you grow to be a better version of yourself. You can become aware of your thoughts and your habits which can help you change them if they are harmful or self-defeating.

Self-inquiry meditation is best suited for this for it specifically aims to help you develop a greater understanding of yourself ad how you relate to others.

Lengthens Attention Span

When practicing a certain type of meditation called focused-attention meditation, you can increase the strength and endurance of your attention. This also helps with age related memory loss. One can even begin to experience the effects after 4 days of meditation.

Generate Kindness

Through meditation, you can increase positive feelings and actions towards yourself and others. Metta (or loving-kindness) meditation is best suited for this for it begins with developing kind thoughts and feelings towards yourself. It increases positivity, empathy and compassionate behaviors towards others.

May Help Fight Addictions

Meditation requires a strong amount of mental discipline, which is often lacking in individuals who have addictions. By strengthening your mental discipline, you can break the dependencies by increasing your self-control and awareness of triggers for the addictive behaviors.

Improves Sleep

Sometimes, when we can’t sleep, it is because something is on our mind, or we are worried about something or someone. These thoughts tend to keep us up at night. With meditation, you may be able to control or redirect these racing thoughts, relax your body and put you in a peaceful state which help you get a better night’s sleep.

Decrease Blood Pressure

Meditation puts your mind at ease, which puts your body at ease, which puts less strain on your heart. High blood pressure makes the heart work harder to pump blood through your entire body and over time, this can lead to poor heart function. Meditation may control blood pressure by relaxing the nerve signals that coordinate heart function and tension in blood vessels.

You Can Meditate Anywhere

Once you have learned how to master the art of ignoring distractions, you can meditate just about anywhere and at any time. Meditation doesn’t require any specialized equipment or space. All you need is you, your mind and your will power.
